Your Camera Should Be Ready Before the Moment Happens

Some photographs disappear while we are still adjusting the camera. A bird leaves the branch. A child stops laughing. The light shifts from someone’s face. By the time the autofocus mode, shutter speed and drive settings are correct, the moment has already become something we almost photographed. This is not always a lack of technical knowledge. Sometimes it is simply the cost of asking one camera to perform several completely different jobs. The settings needed for a relaxed portrait are not the settings you would choose for a bird taking flight. A camera prepared for handheld video may be wrong for a sudden still photograph. Even when you understand exactly what needs to change, making every adjustment individually takes time. Custom shooting modes solve this problem. Often marked C1, C2 and C3 on a camera’s mode dial or menu, custom modes allow a group of settings to be saved and recalled together. One turn of the dial can change the exposure mode, autofocus behaviour, drive speed, subject detection and several other preferences. They do not replace knowledge. They put that knowledge within reach.

Custom modes are stored starting points

A custom mode is best understood as a prepared starting position. You decide how the camera should behave in a particular situation and save those choices together. When that situation appears, you recall the group rather than rebuilding it one setting at a time. The exact options vary between manufacturers and camera models. Some cameras remember almost everything. Others save a more limited group of settings. Certain models return to the stored values whenever the camera is switched off, while others retain temporary adjustments until you leave the mode. The principle remains the same: prepare for the type of photograph before it happens. That preparation is not cheating or surrendering control to automation. You still choose the settings. The camera simply remembers them.

Start with situations, not numbers

The easiest mistake is to begin by asking, “What should I save to C1?” Start with a photographic problem instead. Think about the moments where changing settings slows you down or creates mistakes. You may move regularly between still subjects and action. You may photograph portraits during the day but need a reliable low-light setup for events. Perhaps you alternate between stills and video. Write down three situations that require noticeably different camera behaviour. Those become the jobs for your custom modes.

A useful set for a general photographer might be:

  • C1: everyday and travel photography

  • C2: action, wildlife or unpredictable movement

  • C3: low-light people and events

A hybrid creator might use the third position for video instead. A portrait specialist could create separate natural-light and flash configurations. There is no ideal arrangement for everyone. The modes should reflect what you actually photograph, not what another photographer happens to place on their dial.

C1: a dependable everyday setup

The everyday mode should be flexible enough for a walk, family moment, landscape or object that catches your attention. Aperture Priority is a practical foundation because it lets you control depth of field while the camera manages shutter speed. Auto ISO can respond to changing light, provided you set sensible limits. Single-frame drive avoids collecting unnecessary bursts, while a general autofocus mode keeps the camera responsive.

A starting point might include:

  • Aperture Priority

  • A middle aperture such as f/4 or f/5.6

  • Auto ISO with an appropriate upper limit

  • Continuous autofocus

  • A general focus area

  • Single-frame drive

  • Image stabilisation enabled

  • RAW or RAW+JPEG according to your workflow

  • Color Profile or LUT (if an option)

The aperture will change depending on the subject, but the camera begins in a predictable and useful state. This mode is not designed to make every decision. Its purpose is to prevent surprises. You should not lift the camera for a casual photograph and discover that it is still set to a high-speed burst, unusual white balance or two-second timer from the previous shoot.

C2: prepare for movement

Action photography changes the camera’s priorities. The main risk is no longer excessive depth of field or a slightly elevated ISO. It is subject movement creating blur, or autofocus failing to follow the subject.

This custom mode should favour readiness:

  • Shutter Priority or Manual exposure

  • A fast shutter speed, perhaps around 1/1000 second as a starting point

  • Auto ISO if light may change

  • Continuous autofocus

  • Subject detection suited to people, animals or vehicles

  • High-speed burst

  • A focus area that allows movement across the frame

  • Mechanical or electronic shutter selected deliberately

The shutter speed is not universal. A person walking needs less than a bird in flight. The saved value simply places you much closer to the correct setting than the everyday mode would. Remember that electronic shutters can introduce distortion under some kinds of movement or lighting. A custom action setup should use the shutter type you trust for the situation rather than automatically choosing the fastest advertised burst rate. The purpose is dependable response, not maximum specifications.

C3: protect the moment in low light

Low-light photography often becomes a negotiation between motion blur and image noise. Photographers sometimes protect the ISO so aggressively that the shutter speed becomes too slow. The resulting photograph may have clean shadows but a blurred expression. A sharp image with some noise is usually more useful than a clean image in which the subject moved.

A low-light custom mode could begin with:

  • Aperture Priority or Manual exposure

  • A wide aperture

  • Auto ISO with a realistic maximum

  • A minimum shutter speed appropriate for people

  • Continuous autofocus

  • Human or eye detection

  • Single or low-speed continuous drive

  • Stabilisation enabled

  • Auto white balance or a consistent indoor setting

Image stabilisation can help with camera movement, but it cannot freeze a person. Your saved setup should protect the shutter speed before it protects a perfectly low ISO. For static night scenes, create a different configuration. That is exactly why the mode must be based on a specific situation. “Low light” involving a motionless building is not the same problem as “low light” involving people.

Save only what you understand

Custom modes become frustrating when they contain forgotten settings. You recall C2 expecting fast autofocus, but the camera also changes the file format, metering pattern or button behaviour because those options were active when the mode was saved. The camera seems unpredictable when it is actually recalling exactly what it was told to remember. Before saving a mode, review the camera carefully.

Check:

  • Exposure mode

  • Shutter speed, aperture and ISO behaviour

  • Autofocus mode and focus area

  • Subject detection

  • Drive mode

  • Shutter type

  • Metering

  • White balance

  • File format

  • Stabilisation

  • Any model-specific options that affect operation

The goal is not to customise every menu item. It is to avoid storing a setting accidentally.

Test the transitions

A custom mode is only useful if it works under pressure. Set the camera to your everyday position, then imagine something begins moving. Switch to the action mode without looking at the dial for long. Confirm that the shutter speed, autofocus and drive mode changed as expected. Move back again. Check whether temporary adjustments reset or remain active. Then perform the same test in poor indoor light. This reveals two things: whether the stored settings make sense and whether you can reach them quickly. A perfectly designed custom mode is not helpful if you cannot remember where you placed it. Practise the transition until it becomes familiar.

Review the modes as your photography changes

Custom settings are not permanent. Perhaps you begin photographing more events and realise your low-light minimum shutter speed is too slow. Maybe a firmware update adds improved subject detection. You might change lenses and discover that the previous aperture or stabilisation choices no longer suit the new setup. Update the saved modes when experience gives you better information. A useful custom mode grows from real photographs. Each missed frame, unexpected setting or successful transition teaches you how the camera should be prepared next time.

How my custom modes look

So I use the Lumix S5II and I have several custom mode options to play with.

C1 is my 6k Open gate video settings:

  • 180 degree shutter

  • 6k 3:2 24p

  • Auto ISO if light may change

  • Continuous autofocus

  • Subject detection suited to people

  • Frame markers for 9×16 and 16×9

  • A focus area that allows movement across the frame

  • MOV file format

C2 is my Standard Photo Mode:

  • Manual exposure

  • shutter speed 1/500

  • Auto ISO if light may change

  • Continuous autofocus

  • Subject detection suited to people

  • High-speed burst

  • A focus area that allows movement across the frame

  • Mechanical shutter

  • f/4 aperture

C3 is my panning but more also as it allows for more custom mode so I have wildlife, planes, landscape and even some with just different framing. This allows me to change the camera settings closer to what I want with a flick of a dial.

Preparation protects attention

The greatest advantage of custom modes is not speed by itself. It is attention. When the camera reaches a useful configuration with one deliberate movement, you can keep watching the subject. You can notice the expression, gesture, background and direction of light instead of mentally working through a settings checklist. Technical control should support observation, not compete with it. The camera cannot predict which moment will matter. But it can be ready when you recognise one.
